Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Nevada. You must carry your insurance card in your vehicle and show it upon request by a law enforcement officer. Nevada uses an Insurance Verification Program (IVP) to identify uninsured motorists. Under the program, insurance companies are required to report monthly to the state all new or terminated insurance polices. If the state thinks you do not have coverage, they send you a request to verify insurance information for specified dates. If you fail to respond or your insurance company does not attest to your coverage, your license plates must be surrendered. If you are stopped by a police officer and cannot show proof of insurance, you can receive a traffic citation. The penalties can include registration suspension and $250 reinstatement fee.
Nevada state law requires a minimum coverage of 15/30/15 for Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability. These numbers translate into $15,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person up to a total of $30,000 per accident and $15,000 of Property Damage Liability. While these are the state required minimum coverage amounts, this coverage level is probably not sufficient to fully protect you from financial loss or liability if you are at fault in an accident. Most experts agree and recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.
Nevada uses a fault-based or tort system of insurance. With a tort based system, the at-fault party's insurer pays the medical and rehabilitation expenses of the injured party in a car accident. The injured party also has the right to sue for other losses including pain and suffering. To protect yourself from financial loss, consider carrying more coverage than the state law requires.
